Job Description
The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position at the instructor or collegiate assistant professor level, effective August 2023, to lead communications programs for BEAM undergraduate students in design and research with consideration to a range of platforms (e.g. papers, presentations, graphic design, materials for conferences, etc…), audiences, and settings. This individual will also contribute to student professional development (such as job application portfolios and interview skills) and pedagogical practices of the department. The individual will also have the opportunity to contribute to existing coursework in engineering design and practice and collaborate in the department’s efforts in enhancing experiential learning opportunities for students, including internships, undergraduate research, and study abroad pending if the individual has technical and/or engineering background.
BEAM is an interdisciplinary department with faculty having broad interests spanning engineering, science, mathematics, and medicine. Offering BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering and engineering mechanics, BEAM currently has 45 faculty members and is home to over 200 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. BEAM’s graduate Biomedical Engineering (BME) program is ranked #34 by US News & World Report. Required Qualifications
-Master’s Degree in engineering, science, communications or related field
-Previous experience teaching college students and/or providing presentations to large professional audiences in a corporate environment
-Previous employment involved in technical communication/writing
Preferred Qualifications

-Ph.D. in Engineering Education or a STEM field
-Previous experience working in higher education and/or corporate environment
- Previous experience providing instruction or conducting pedagogical research focused on technical communication/writing
-Previous experience advising college students on writing and career related topics.
