The Departments of Anesthesiology and Surgery at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine are seeking applications for a Communications Generalist/Specialist to join their departments. The Communication Generalist/Specialist will be responsible for the creative development and execution of digital and print internal marketing materials that support the Departments of Anesthesiology and Surgery and deliver on their strategic communications goals as identified by the Executive Leadership of the two departments.

The Department of Anesthesiology includes general and specialty faculty anesthesiologists that support nine clinical divisions, basic science research and clinical trial research.
The Department of Surgery consists of nine division, clinical research trials and is engaged in a wide range of basic science research in which they collaborate with other surgical divisions and other academic institutions.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Manage a wide-variety of departmental communications activities. Coordinate and contribute to print publications and e-communications. Translate organizational goals into logistical plans, operationalizing desired outcomes.
Identify public relations opportunities, write and edit content and submit to SOM and UVA Health Marketing for publication consideration (UVA Connect, Medicine in Motion, etc)
Facilitate newsletter publication by identifying topics, drafting/editing content, developing layout, maintaining distribution lists and managing distribution.
Facilitate and coordinate clinician presentations (bios, videos, etc.) with HS Marketing for publication on HS web sites.
Manage ongoing and special events, coordinating exhibitions, logistics, agendas, staff, speaker arrangements, and external promotions
Manage and update departmental web sites, maintaining compliance with institutional standards.
Monitor and manage departmental social media platforms.
Coordinate with outside consultants as necessary.
Establish and maintain events and publications calendar.
May oversee the work of other staff members, providing mentoring and guidance, as appropriate.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualified candidates must have a bachelor’s degree with one year of experience. The ideal candidate will possess a well-rounded communication skillset with experience developing assets for a range of visual mediums including, but not limited to, newsletters, reports, social media, emails, presentations and other digital content formats.
This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.
The anticipated start date is February 2023. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $48,000 - $60,000 commensurate with education and experience. This is an Exempt level, benefited position.
