Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities:
The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) at VCU is a one-year scholarship program that recognizes and supports the development and engagement of emerging first-year student leaders at the university. The Coordinator for ELP has responsibility for supporting the day-to-day functions of the program. The Coordinator will supervise and meet regularly with the undergraduate ELP student interns and mentors. The Coordinator will assist in helping students in the program deepen their understanding of engagement through co-curricular leadership, service, and community programming both on and off-campus. The Coordinator will create and track participation in events in RamsConnect to help students complete their program requirements. The Coordinator will assist with recruitment, selection, training, marketing, assessment, student success meetings and crisis intervention. For qualified candidates the Coordinator will teach ELP courses as needed. The Coordinator will support alumni and development programming and initiatives. The Coordinator will assist in assessing program learning outcomes and will report findings to the team. The Coordinator will support the Peer Leadership Initiative as necessary or as directed by the Assistant Director for Student Leadership. The position will ensure successful collaboration with other units with the Division of Student Affairs and the wide university and Richmond community. The position requires some work outside of normal business hours including nights and weekends.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
Bachelor’s degree in leadership, education, social sciences, or related fields. Experience with management of leadership development programs, student programming, or living learning programs. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Knowledge of student development theory and practice. Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Demonstrated commitment to student success and experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU. Ability to function independently and as a member of a team in a constantly changing environment.
Preferred Hiring Standards:
Master’s degree in leadership, education, social sciences, or related fields. Experience in evaluation and assessment of programs. Experience with teaching undergraduate leadership theory and practice. Experience serving as a peer leader as an undergraduate or graduate student. Ability to be certified to drive university vehicles.
