Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:
The Coordinator for Civic Engagement is responsible for developing and administering student programs and opportunities centered on civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism. The coordinator oversees the promotion of programs like large days of service and cultural immersion trips, recruits and supervises student employees and student volunteers, helps manage and facilitate purchases, assists with strategic planning, and acts as a liaison to campus and community partners and national associations that relate specifically to the work of civic engagement and service learning. This position serves as a primary advisor for the VCU Votes Student Coalition, and serves as a member of the VCU Votes Advisory Council. This position also directly oversees VCU’s comprehensive Alternative Breaks program, a University-certified REAL Level 3 experience for students, which encompasses budget management, student and faculty/staff volunteer recruitment and training, and risk management oversight. This position is also responsible for student development and mentoring. The Coordinator for Civic Engagement reports to the Assistant Director for Student Organizations, Leadership and Civic Engagement.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
Bachelor’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student College Personnel Counseling, or a related discipline or equivalent training and/or experience. Experience advising and/or supervising programs related to civic engagement, volunteerism, service, involvement, leadership, and/or student organizations. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to create, implement, and evaluate university-wide student centered programs. Ability to create organizational goals and reporting. Ability to demonstrate initiative; work independently, and as a team member. Ability to work in a culturally diverse setting and with diverse populations and a commitment to furthering diversity, equity, and inclusion.
