Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is looking for motivated individuals interested in a career in public safety. Corrections Officers are provided paid training, uniforms and the opportunity to advance and grow a career while enjoying excellent benefits.

Corrections Officers contribute to the public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and supervisees ensuring effective and safe custody and control along with compliance with policy and procedure: This is successfully accomplished through the use of evidence-based practices and principles that enhance effective communication strategies and role modeling as part of collaborative multi-disciplinary teams addressing supervisees needs.

Officers provide security over adult supervisees at the institution and while in transport; supervise the daily activities of supervisees while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement. They interact with the visitors, staff, supervisees and public to maintain orderly and secure operations.

Corrections Officers are scheduled to work on average 14 days a month. Shifts are usually 12 hours and vary by facility usually beginning at either 5:40am or 5:40pm.

Please Note: All persons that are newly hired, rehired, transferred, promoted, or demoted into a Corrections Officer position must serve a new 12-month probationary period. This excludes current Virginia Department of Corrections security employees possessing an active DCJS Corrections Officer Certification.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation. Ability to lawfully possess and carry a firearm.

Selected candidates of this position must also have the ability to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements which include medical screening, background check and drug testing to include screening for marijuana use.

Additional Considerations

Stable employment history, military or related criminal justice experience. Prefer individuals at least 21 years old (a waiver may be provided by the Unit Head for individuals 18-20 years old). Bi-lingual and Multi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Marijuana use is prohibited for positions that require possession of a firearm or a Commercial Driver’s License in the performance of official duties such as Corrections Officers, Probation Officers, Tractor Trailer Drivers and others.
