About the Department:

The Office of the Provost is the primary central administrative unit for the university’s academic programs. Its range of interests include curriculum, instructional personnel, assessment, accreditation, international initiatives, and oversight of the overall academic mission. Within the Office of the Provost, the Office of Undergraduate Education manages undergraduate academic programs that stretch across all colleges and schools at George Mason University. These include university-level curriculum approval, general education (Mason Core), University Studies programs, the Office of Academic Advising, and Mason Impact initiatives that support transformational learning for undergraduate students, including the Office of Student Creative Activities and Research (OSCAR), Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning (CECiL), and Office of Fellowships. About the Position:

The Curriculum Support Specialist assists the Senior Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Director of Curriculum and Initiatives. The role oversees the operations of the Undergraduate Council, a body that reviews and approves the undergraduate curriculum at George Mason. The support specialist monitors and moves undergraduate proposals through the course management system and prepares the proposals for a vote by the council. In addition, this role manages the software used to collect and store applications for the various programs in Mason Impact and the Office of Creative Activities and Research, and the information will be used to do internal reporting of the program’s participation and success. This role assists in many aspects of the Mason Impact program including grant administration, communication, and meeting coordination.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports the Senior Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education in coordinating the undergraduate curriculum approval process by:
    • Scheduling and preparing the agenda and other materials for Undergraduate Council meetings;
    • Serving as a liaison to the Office of the Registrar, Graduate Division, and academic units;
    • Preparing and compiling the results of surveys before each Undergraduate Council meetings;
    • Ushering curriculum change proposals through the course management system;
  • Maintains the application collection and information storage software for the programs in Mason Impact and the Office of Student Creative Activities and Research. This includes:
    • Maintaining the application process;
    • Opening of application cycles at the appropriate times; 
    • Looking for efficiencies in the data collection and reporting process;
  • Leads efforts in collection and reporting of data from programs in Mason Impact and the Office of Student Creative Activities and Research. This reporting includes:
    • Creating annual reports;
    • Creation and maintenance of web reports;
    • Ad-hoc assessment and university level reports;
    • Additional reporting as requested by the Director of Curriculum and Initiatives or the Senior Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education;
  • Oversees Mason Impact Mini and Micro grant program and the Office of Student Creative Activities and Research Excellence Awards. This oversight includes, but is not limited to:
    • Recruitment of faculty and students, leading proposal workshops, making grant decisions, grant administration, and oversight of grant spending;
  • Supports the Director of Curriculum and Initiatives in the scheduling of and preparing materials for the Faculty and Curricular Activities Committee, responding to the Mason Impact email, and sending communications to faculty teaching Mason Impact Courses; and
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Some experience working in an office environment;
  • Some experience leading projects with delegated responsibility;
  • Some experience working with database software;
  • Some experience with working with a data manipulation tool such as excel, R, or SPSS;
  • Knowledge of working with databases;
  • Knowledge of basic data manipulation techniques;
  • Skill with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint);
  • Demonstrated evidence of skill in professional communications, specifically via email;
  • Demonstrated ability of working independently; and
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a project with delegated responsibility within an office environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field;
  • Considerable experience working in an office environment;
  • Some experience working in higher education;
  • Some experience with higher education curriculum;
  • Considerable experience with working with a data manipulation tool such as excel, R, or SPSS;
  • Some experience working with an application collection software;
  • Knowledge of higher education curriculum;
  • Knowledge of application collection software systems;
  • Knowledge of the creation of elements within a database program;
  • Skill in working with data in programs such as Excel, R, or SPSS; and
  • Skill in graphic design and page layout.
