Job Duties

The Deputy Clerk (Grade 8) is assigned operational responsibilities in a multi-jurisdiction office with frequent deadlines. Ensures court’s instructions are executed and that legal papers are prepared with accuracy and in accordance with appropriate policies and procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to; preparing detailed court documents in accordance with established guidelines, automated case management system data entry, scheduling matters for court, preparing correspondence, filing court documents, daily docket preparation and attending court sessions, assessing fines and costs, receipting payments, general bookkeeping, preparation of daily cash settlement and bank deposit slips, and the ability to deliver a high degree of customer service to the public. Must be able to multitask and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by management. This is a small office and applicant must be a team player, self-reliant and be able to work independently.

Minimum Qualifications


A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Most competitive applicants will have knowledge of the court system. Applicant should possess significant knowledge, skills and ability in time management and customer service. Applicant must have the ability to explain procedures in a clear and easy to understand manner in person, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and have an advanced knowledge of office automation systems and computer software required, specifically in Microsoft Office Word and Excel. The ideal candidate must have experience working in a team environment with extreme flexibility. Accurate data entry and computer skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Court experience in the Commonwealth of Virginia, office experience, customer service experience and experience handling money preferred.
