The Director, Ambulatory Access is responsible for the administrative, operational and financial performance of UVA scheduling Pods. This role is the accountable leader for the development and implementation of infrastructure design, systems and workflow processes to facilitate an effective and efficient scheduling process across ambulatory clinics and procedural areas that span a variety of clinical services and service lines within the Health system. This role is also responsible and accountable for improved patient and physician satisfaction specific to access, increased team member engagement amongst access team members and increased clinical revenue. Additional responsibilities include the implementation of access standards and training programs to harmonize the scheduling function and remove unintended variations in the process to ensure the alignment of patient access activities across the Health System.
The Director ensures scheduling service line teams (Pods) meet or exceed performance standards through close collaboration and partnership with service line and other administrative and physician leaders, as well as key support functions, such as Revenue Cycle, HIT, School of Medicine and other stakeholders across the health system for all access-related concerns.

  • Plans, organizes, directs and manages, assigned scheduling Pods
  • Coordinates the recruitment and orientation of key personnel; develops and motivates employees to optimize talents and meet the overall needs and goals of the organization.
  • Ensures effective communication and collaboration with the Director of Patient Friendly Access, Director(s), Ambulatory Services, physician leadership and nursing to ensure goals, operations, and strategic direction are aligned.
  • Develops operating and capital budgets for ambulatory access programs. Make recommendations to management areas. Achieves budgetary goals.
  • Serves on a number of ad hoc and standing committees.
  • Provides effective leadership.
  • Models effective communication and collaboration skills / behaviors.
  • Takes action to achieve measurable results.
  • Supports innovation and organizational change to improve effectiveness.
  • Ensures compliance of regulatory and access quality assurance programs with the Medical Center goals.
  • Develops talent and coaches peers and others to develop their capabilities.
  • Applies knowledge of functional area to effectively manage operations.
  • Responsible and accountable for meeting external and/or internal customers’ needs.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $93,142.40 - $149,032.00 Annual


Education: Master’s degree required or obtained within 2 years.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years' experience in progressively more responsible roles. Epic Implementation and Call Center Management experience is highly desirable. Clinical Scheduling experience is highly desirable. Other Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to balance many demands simultaneously. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Licensure: None.


This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
