THE OPPORTUNITY

The Center for Comparative Medicine at the University of Virginia is currently seeking to recruit a highly qualified individual into the role of Director, Center for Comparative Medicine. The University of Virginia is an AAALAC accredited institution located in central Virginia at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Center manages and operates ten vivaria encompassing 104,916 sq ft. Approximately 60,000 barrier-maintained mice are housed daily in addition to a variety of other laboratory animal species. The Center operates an animal disease diagnostic and research laboratory, a small BSL3/ABSL3 facility approved by the CDC for Select Agent research, three large animal surgical operating theaters, and a gnotobiotic rodent program.

This role serves as the institution’s Attending Veterinarian providing veterinary oversight, support, and guidance for the UVA Animal Care and Use program. This position serves a critical function in support of excellent animal care and welfare within the context of the University's highly successful biomedical research program. The position reports to the Vice President for Research who is the Institutional Official and has ultimate authority over the program. The Director serves a critical role in meeting regulatory requirements and ensuring that the animal care program is in alignment with regulations and standards of veterinary care for all vertebrate animals that are used in research, teaching, and testing at UVA. This position will support the Office of Animal Welfare which has primary oversight for the animal use regulations training and compliance oversight across the institution, support the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) which has primary oversight of the University Animal Care and Use program, and support the Institutional Biosafety Committee which has primary oversight of biosafety practices.

THE ROLE

The Director will serve as a resource to provide advice to animal researchers at the University who wish to develop or adopt cutting-edge technology and animal models to advance biomedical research. This Director routinely interacts with a wide variety of University stakeholders in addition to supporting and being a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. This position requires knowledge and expertise in laboratory animal medicine and surgery, biosafety, and gnotobiology in a complex, high-performing research institution. Excellent interpersonal and management skills are necessary to work effectively with an animal care staff of 90 individuals, six veterinary technicians, the Center’s Associate Director, and members of the University research community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership
  • Directs and oversees veterinary medical care programs including diagnosis and treatment of disease, preventive medicine, health monitoring, and quarantine.
  • Provides veterinary medical diagnostic, surgical, and treatment services for research animals.
  • Provides research support to University scientists through the development and maintenance of optimum laboratory animal facilities, consultative services, and training programs in comparative biology and medicine, research methods, animal models, protocol submission and review, surgical techniques, variables that affect animal experimentation, and compliance with state and federal laws institutional policies.
  • The Director will serve as a resource to provide animal researchers at the University who wish to develop or adopt cutting edge technology and animal models to advance biomedical research.
  • Partners on the development and management of regulatory compliance and post-approval monitoring of animal use protocols. Ensures compliance with departmental and University policies and procedures and applicable local, state, and federal laws and accreditation standards. Ensures that animals are provided care in accordance with federal and state regulations to promote physical and psychological well-being and minimize discomfort.
  • This Director anticipates new research directions and facility needs, proactively develops new programs of research support for new research endeavors and trains the Center’s staff and research personnel on prudent practices for new programs, fosters and facilitates new program implementation and codifies these with written standard operating procedures.


Operations
  • Directs operations of the Center for Comparative Medicine. Develops short and long-term strategic plans related to budget, personnel, facilities, and equipment.
  • Oversees development and management of department budget covering operations and sponsored projects, and per diem calculations using the NIH Animal Facility Rate Setting Manual (2000) as the basis. Reviews or makes major budgetary and resource allocation decisions including facility and equipment needs. Provides financial status reports to senior management, as needed.
  • Develops and implements security-related procedures such as vivarium opening and closing routines. Coordinates security activities with University Safety Officials. Promotes and maintains standards for security-conscious awareness and behavior.
  • Facilitates vivarium equipment purchases, repairs, replacement, and interactions with Facilities Management regarding vivarium design, utilities, vivarium interior finishes, and environmental conditions using the NIH vivarium design guidelines as a basis.


Management
  • Serves as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and other regulatory committees as required.
  • Directly manages all subordinate staff, usually through subordinate managers or supervisors. Determines organizational structure, reporting relationships and short and long-range staffing needs based on research program requirements.
  • Reviews and approves hiring and salary actions to ensure compliance with policies. Oversees performance appraisal process for staff and remains informed, and at times involved, in any disciplinary actions required. Ensures the proper training of the Center’s and research personnel involved in laboratory animal research and care.
  • Oversees the administration of on-the-job training programs for animal care staff, research staff and investigators in order to meet standards of performance.


IDEAL EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate must be a licensed DVM in at least one state, be board certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and have a minimum of seven to ten years of experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian preferably in an academic institutional environment. Candidates that also possess a Ph.D. in the sciences or medical arts are preferred.

Additional professional qualifications and personal characteristics include the following:

  • Must be eligible to obtain licensure to practice Veterinary Medicine in the state of Virginia.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with all federal and state regulations and requirements related to animals used in research.
  • Significant years of experience managing a program accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International.
  • Extensive experience with the design and construction of vivaria.
  • Must exhibit a customer-service-oriented management style that assists and supports the institution’s researchers while simultaneously ensuring regulatory compliance. Must demonstrate proven management and strategic planning skills in the areas of budget, facilities, personnel and veterinary care.
