These roles are responsible for managing and overseeing the day-to-day functions that support UVA Physicians Group’s (UPG) physical, operational, and real estate needs. The Director of Facilities, Real Estate & Asset Management provides strategic leadership for facilities operations, real estate portfolio management, and associated insurance requirements.
This role ensures that UPG’s owned and leased properties are maintained, compliant, cost-effective, and aligned with organizational growth objectives. The Director applies an entrepreneurial and strategic mindset to guide real estate investment decisions, optimize space utilization, and support the facilities requirements of clinical and administrative operations.
The position is accountable for developing and executing real estate and facilities strategies, including acquisition, leasing, disposition, and lifecycle management of assets, while ensuring appropriate insurance coverage and risk mitigation for all properties.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership & Real Estate Management
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive real estate strategy aligned with UPG’s operational, financial, and growth objectives.
  • Evaluate and lead decision-making related to property acquisition, leasing, renewal, disposition, and development opportunities.
  • Provide entrepreneurial leadership in identifying and assessing real estate investments, partnerships, and portfolio optimization opportunities.
  • Oversee the full lifecycle of owned and leased properties, including financial performance, utilization, and long-term planning.

Facilities & Operations Oversight
  • Ensure all UPG facilities are safe, compliant, operational, and aligned with regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Direct facilities management functions including maintenance, repairs, capital improvements, and vendor management.
  • Support space planning, allocation, and optimization across clinical, administrative, and support environments.
  • Collaborate with consultants and contractors on capital projects including building fit-outs and renovations.
  • Leverage technology and data analytics to optimize facility operations.
  • Advance sustainability and energy‑efficient building operations without compromising the quality or safety of patient care
  • Available for on-call needs as necessary.


Insurance & Risk Management
  • Oversee insurance requirements related to real estate holdings and facilities operations, including property, liability, and related coverages.
  • Partner with risk management and legal teams to ensure adequate coverage, compliance, and mitigation of operational and financial risks.
  • Evaluate insurance needs during acquisitions, leases, and capital projects to ensure appropriate protection.

Financial & Portfolio Management
  • Develop and manage budgets related to facilities operations, capital projects, and real estate investments.
  • Analyze financial performance of real estate assets, including cost efficiency, return on investment, and total cost of occupancy.
  • Negotiate leases, contracts, and vendor agreements to achieve favorable financial and operational outcomes.

Leadership & Organizational Impact
  • Represents people leaders (hire/fire authority) with majority of time spent overseeing their area of responsibility; achieves goals through direct and/or indirect reports.
  • Manages a Department, Division, or multiple Job Areas.
  • Accountable for performance and strategic direction of facilities and real estate functions.
  • Develops solutions to complex, cross-functional problems requiring extensive subject matter expertise.
  • Influences stakeholders across the organization to adopt best practices in facilities, real estate, and asset management


Position Compensation Range: The pay range for this role is $155,854.40 - $249,371.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering business, finance, real estate, facilities management, or related discipline.
  • Masters degree preferred (not required).

Experience:
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in facilities management, real estate, property management, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in working in a health care environment - overseeing health care facilities, real estate portfolio management, leasing, or property investment analysis.
  • Experience overseeing insurance requirements and risk management related to facilities or real estate assets preferred.
  • Four additional years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will have direct and/or indirect supervisory responsibility over facilities and/or real estate staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This is primarily a sedentary role involving extensive computer use, with periodic travel to properties, meetings, and project sites.
