The University of Virginia Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy (Batten School) is seeking applicants for the Director of Marketing and Communications. This position plays a critical role in the Batten School by leading and executing comprehensive brand development, marketing, and communication initiatives and activities that advance the mission and strategy. Now in its fifteenth year, the Batten School generates knowledge that addresses pressing public policy challenges and broadly prepares students for ethical and effective leadership and public service. With continued robust growth, the Batten School attracts action-oriented students in rigorous graduate and undergraduate degree programs and fosters an exceptional faculty conducting research and engaging a wide range of stakeholders on issues impacting public life, a dedicated staff team, and a growing and committed alumni and donor network.

The Director of Marketing and Communications serves as a member of the senior leadership team to co-develop a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that weighs progress on strategic objectives in key school audience areas including student prospects, students, and alumni; academic research and impact; donor prospects and fundraising; as well as internal Batten School and UVA audiences with available resources and capabilities. Working directly with key audience owners, (e.g. Admissions for student prospects, Advancement for donor prospects, etc.) the Director develops and helps execute specific workplans to achieve these audience goals. This work requires leading a marketing and communications team that includes direct reports, matrixed staff, partners, and vendors; shaping and developing the overall brand position of the school; and enabling core capabilities such as content creation, market research, marketing, creative services, media relations, and executive & crisis communications. This role has significant involvement in engagement partnerships and events with both other UVA schools and units and well as with external organizations and employers to raise the profile of the school.

The Director reports to the Dean of the Batten School, manages the school’s marketing and communications team, and collaborate extensively with the senior leadership team, faculty, staff, students, the Batten School Foundation Board, and others to both implement strategic initiatives and support ongoing marketing and communication services to the school community. With the importance of understanding the key audiences of the school, this role is primarily in-person and located on UVA grounds in Charlottesville, Virginia.

This is an exciting moment in the development of the Batten School. Over the next decade, we aim to increase our reach into new and underserved student communities, further bolster research discoveries, connect policy makers with the Batten School community to shape policy solutions, and invest in our community, program excellence, and requisite infrastructure. This trajectory also creates exciting opportunities to partner with other schools and organizations, such as the newly formed Karsh Institute of Democracy , to support the broader ambitions detailed in the University of Virginia 2030 strategic plan .
