The University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a Director of Research Finance & Administration to provide operational, administrative, and logistical support across the entire scope of the School of Medicine Research Offices. The Director directly supports the Senior Associate Dean of Research in the School of Medicine. Research in the School of Medicine includes all areas that report to the Senior Associate Dean for Research, including the Offices of Research, Research CORES, Grants & Contracts, Clinical Research, Telehealth, Innovations, Clinical & Translational Research Development, Medical Science Training Program, Graduate Program Office, and other research supporting areas and activities. Collectively these units have an annual expense budget of over $48 million. This role will serve as a primarily liaison between the operational contacts in those areas and the Office of Educational Affairs to optimize processes, support executive oversight and drive School-level initiatives.

Position responsibilities include:
  • Partnering with unit administrators across the various research units to optimize processes, support cross-collaboration and coverage, and provide backup support as needed.
  • Serving as liaison on behalf of the Senior Associate Dean with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Overseeing budget preparation, review and comparison to actuals across the entire enterprise (>$48M), including the preparation of the Institutional Funding Plan (>$1.6M) which delivers support to departments for key research leadership and activities.
  • Managing faculty appointments across the research mission, including coordination with the Office for Faculty Affairs and Human Resources. Track appointment timelines and proactively develop streamlined process to ensure that both paid and non-paid faculty appointments are managed effectively.
  • Provide strategic direction for research finance and administration operations across departments or institutes.
  • Develop and implement long-term financial and operational plans for research growth.
  • Serving as the primarily contact for data inquiries, ensure alignments across data sources and consistent reporting to all internal and external parties providing leadership with analytics and insights to track key metrics such as funding trends, Indirect cost recovery and portfolio growth.
  • Serving as the primary financial and administrative contact and administrator for the Clinical & Translational Research Development unit.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in business, accounting, or related discipline

Experience: At least five years of administrative and supervisory experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience within UVA School of Medicine and familiarity with research administration at UVA

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
