Job Description
Based at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, Abingdon, the director will report to the associate vice president for engagement and will provide support to the director for the Center for Economic and Community Engagement. The director will serve as an integral member of the Outreach and International Affairs leadership team.
The director:
•Provides leadership, management, and program development for Virginia Tech in the southwest Virginia region.
•Collaborates with university academic departments to develop a comprehensive portfolio of graduate degree programs, undergraduate courses, and noncredit offerings. Provides faculty and departments with market insight on regional needs.
•Supports corporate partners and public agencies in accessing university assets to address economic, research, workforce, and community development needs with the goal of securing funded collaboration opportunities.
•Provides business development through new lead generation and existing client management.
Builds revenue through program creation, expansion, and delivery.
•Partners with regional colleges and universities, public school divisions (K-12), private
foundations, industry, workforce, and economic development agencies to establish a STEM
innovation hub in Southwest Virginia. Develops and delivers turnkey workforce solutions that
expand high need credentials and skills development.
•Participates in community outreach events to promote the center's portfolio of programs and services. Develops programs to enhance alumni relations and engage alumni in center activities in partnership with VT alumni relations office.
•Prepares and manages program budgets. Monitors and evaluates overall effectiveness of
programs and activities, and implements changes for continuous improvement.
•Provides oversight for planning, management, and reporting activities in the region.
•Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations and university
policies.
•Oversees recruitment, training, supervision, professional development, and evaluation of
assigned personnel.
•Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
•Completed bachelor’s degree and significant experience in educational program development,
planning, implementation, administration, and evaluation.
•Demonstrated ability to identify and secure new sources of institutional and external funding.
•Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
•Excellent marketing and promotional skills.
•Supervisory experience.
•Excellent organizational and planning skills.
•Demonstrated ability to establish close linkages within the academic community and must
have a keen understanding of the culture of education.
•Ability to create and maintain collaborative relationships.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field.
Familiarity with the technology, economic development, and K-12 communities in the Southwest Virginia region and assets at Virginia Tech.
Experience with the management of applied research or technical assistance projects in a corporate, government, or educational setting.
