Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Pediatric Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery at VCU Health is actively recruiting for a dynamic physician to lead a renowned Division of Pediatric Surgery within the Department of Surgery. This position is a senior-level, tenure-track faculty position for Division Chair in the area of Pediatric Surgery. As Division Chair, this position will be responsible for driving the continued growth and advancement of pediatric surgery both here at VCU and in our surrounding communities. This role will have leadership responsibilities within the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU as well as lead pediatric surgery clinical and research partnerships in collaboration with ORBIT and other institutional research groups. The faculty member will also support the division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching
Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Pediatric Surgery with direct oversight to the resident clinics at the VCU Medical Center.

Research
Faculty member will be nationally recognized and expected to maintain an active research portfolio. Faculty member is expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program of the department and will be responsible for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, residents and junior faculty.

Service
This role will have significant leadership responsibilities within the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Faculty member will serve on departmental and hospital committees as assigned and participate in regional and national professional organizations.

Clinical
Faculty member’s clinical responsibility will be in the care of the Pediatric Surgery patients at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU as well as community facilities. They will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice with the support of Department leadership.

Administrative duties: Division Chair
Responsibilities include and are not limited to the management of a growing pediatric surgery multi-disciplinary practice at multiple locations and administrative management of the Division of Pediatric Surgery. This position will also be responsible for mentoring of junior faculty.

Required Qualifications:
  • Board Certified / Board Eligible in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery
  • Track record of external funding
  • Commitment to resident education and teaching as well as clinical research and innovation
  • Ability to work in a complex matrix environment with a high emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Unique clinical skills (e.g., fetal surgery) and funding as an independent investigator is strongly preferred
  • Interest in global surgery
  • Leadership experience in an clinical program (program/residency director)
