Job Duties
POSITION: The College of Science, Engineering, and Technology invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Optical Engineering at the Associate or Full Professor level.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will join a cohesive faculty group in Optical and Electrical Engineering and be responsible for full participation in the management and oversight of research and education program offerings for the undergraduate and graduate programs.
Faculty responsibilities include: Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in optical and electrical engineering; advising/mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; participation in departmental activities related to the future growth and direction of Engineering Department programs, with emphasis on the Optical Engineering program; and management of a faculty-directed research effort in support of the Engineering Department graduate programs, including participation in efforts to integrate quantum science and quantum device engineering into the graduate program.
About Engineering at Norfolk State University: Norfolk State University is a Historically Black University located in the city of Norfolk, Virginia. The Norfolk State campus enrollment is approximately 6,000 students, and the campus has a rich tradition of undergraduate teaching and research. Norfolk State has an emergent focus on quantum science and engineering, as well as maturing efforts in bioengineering, advanced materials, and renewable energy technologies. These activities are carried out by interdisciplinary teams from Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science. Academic degree programs supported by the Engineering Department include bachelor of science degree in Optical Engineering, bachelor and master of science degree programs in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and master of science and doctoral degrees in Materials Science and Engineering. Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. degree in Optical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field.
A demonstrated publication related to optics, photonics, quantum devices, or nanoscience.
A record of successful grantsmanship.
The candidate must also have the ability to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in an optical engineering curriculum.
Additional Considerations
Preferred qualifications include prior administrative or leadership experience, and the ability to design and/or teach graduate and undergraduate courses in quantum optics, quantum device physics, nano- or integrated photonics, or advanced microelectronics devices. Industrial or collegiate experience in cleanroom operation or usage and demonstrated funding with federal agencies is also preferred.
