JOB DESCRIPTION Norfolk State University invites applications for a tenure-track position for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Social Work in The Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work. Candidates are required to possess an MSW from a CSWE accredited Social Work Program and to have earned a terminal degree (PhD, DSW) in social work or a related field. ABD candidates will be considered. The candidate selected is expected to demonstrate and engage in scholarship; provide evidence or potential for exemplary teaching (3+3 teaching load); serve as a professional advisor; provide dissertation support to doctoral students, and engage in service at the university, community, regional, and national levels. We are open to candidates that can teach various courses across academic programs. This is a full-time, on-site, tenure-track position (nine-month) beginning August 2025. DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION The Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work at Norfolk State University offers a BSW, MSW (online and in-person), and PhD (online and in-person) in Social Work. The School of Social Work enrolls nearly 400 exemplary students and employs nearly 30 talented faculty and staff. The School of Social Work faculty produce scholarly work in the areas of child welfare, health, mental health, military social work, macro/community practice, LGBTQ, spirituality, and selfcare. Since 2021, the School of Social Work has received nearly $2 million dollars in grants and contracts. Minimum Qualifications
MSW degree from a CSWE accredited program.
DSW or PhD in Social Work or PhD in a related field. ABD candidates will be considered. Terminal degree is required at the time of employment.
Teaching experience and/or evidence of research and scholarly activity.
Additional Considerations
Experience in teaching Social Work courses at undergraduate or graduate level, especially in the areas of psychopathology and human behavior.
Experience in grantsmanship and research that is commensurate with employment at the rank of assistant/associate professor.
Experience in online teaching, preferably using Blackboard Ultra.
Demonstrate multicultural competence including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations.
