The C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research at the Virginia Commonwealth University seeks a Faculty Development Program Manager to manage and supports the educational goals, mission and programming of the Wright Center. The Faculty Development Program Manager supports the educational goals, mission and programming of the Wright Center by providing high-quality and specialized program support of the Center’s pre-faculty and junior faculty career development and translational workforce development initiatives.
The incumbent will organize scientific training and education programs for the Center, provide specialized program management support to the K12 program directors, manage the faculty trainee application process, participate in assessment and reporting activities, and guide communication efforts to reach intended faculty audiences.
Typical Duties
50% Essential Manages scientific training and education programs for the Center
• Manages all aspects of the K12 program and SKolar Community for junior faculty, including: o Independently plans, organizes, and coordinates with participants and stakeholders in managing of workshops, seminars, professional development and other learning opportunities for Center constituents o Organizes additional training events using multiple formats to benefit Center scholars, trainees and other stakeholders. o Facilitates the implementation of program activities to meet grant specifications as well as needs and expectations of the participants o Coordinates and collaborates with faculty stakeholders to facilitate long-range planning and development to ensure compliance with stated program objectives Facilitates and participates in the collaboration between directors, center leadership and other stakeholders to determine common core competencies, as defined by NCATS (our primary funding agency), for scholars and trainees.
10% Essential Provides specialized program management support to the K12 program directors
• Drafts, prepares and/or proofreads letters, memos, grant manuscripts, presentations, and other professional correspondence for the Education directors by established deadlines and assignment requirements. • Fosters and manages collaborations with regional CTS partners • Provides specialized administrative support to include: developing a working budget, monitoring expenses, submission of payment request, organizing and distributing meeting materials, and managing the logistics for related meetings • Assists with the oversight and coordination of student and trainee rotations (where applicable) • Other specialized needs as required for collaboration with related professional, scientific and international organizations.
10% Essential Trainee Application Process
• Manages the application process for K12 scholars, Wright Faculty Scholars in Health Disparities, Diversity Scholars including outreach and recruitment efforts • Collaborates closely with Center leadership through the selection and notification process. • Manages the NIH scholar certification and appointment process
10% Essential Orientation materials, guides development and preparation
• Coordinates, organizes, prepares materials, and facilitates orientation for new scholars entering Wright Center programs. • Tracks scholar progress throughout their training period to ensure that training/research goals are being met. Coaches scholars to ensure scholars successfully progress through their awards
10% Essential Assessment and Reporting
• Compiles and tracks vital data to demonstrate impact of Center’s educational initiatives via RedCap Databases and other Center mechanisms • Manages the reporting requirements to NCATS and other stakeholders as needed to ensure that all grant requirements are met in a timely manner and accurate information is provided. • Prepares annual reports to document project progress and outcomes.
10% Essential Communications and Outreach
• Determines communications strategy and works with Center’s communications specialist to promote and disseminate programming information to university community and other stakeholders. • Manages a monthly newsletter to SKolar Community members.
Typical Education and Experience
Minimum hiring standards:
• Bachelor’s degree required in health, science, research communication or related discipline or combination of relevant experience, education, and training.
• A minimum of three to five years of relevant experience in research with emphasis on research communication, research education, research management, engagement, or related field.
• Ability to design, develop, and manage education programming for adult learners.
• Ability to identify key learning needs, prepare content and coordinate workshops, seminars and e-learning opportunities for Center constituents and stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of NIH grant submission process as it relates to trainees and junior faculty.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills with the ability to assess individual needs of faculty and staff and build partnerships.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred hiring standards:
• Master’s degree preferred in scientific education or related field
• Understanding and application of adult learning principals
• Basic knowledge of scientific project management
• Knowledge of scientific writing; clearly, accurately, and engagingly conveying complex scientific, clinical and translational research in long and short form for a variety of audiences, including investigators, and the scientific and participant communities across a variety of platforms.
• Ability to be self-directed and work independently
