Job Description

The laboratory of Dr. Ryunosuke Amo at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to investigate neurocircuit mechanisms of learning and decision-making, with a focus on dopamine neural coding and its dysfunction. Please see:

The successful candidate will work with mice and conduct in vivo neurophysiology with molecular tools, data analysis, and modeling (using MATLAB or similar programming languages). A basic knowledges and deep interest in neuroscience are required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in in vivo neurophysiology and/or computational data analysis. With guidance and support from the supervisor, the postdoctoral associate is expected to lead a project within their scientific discipline and collaborate with other researchers.

The duties of the role will include but may not be limited to the following:
• Neurophysiology & Imaging: Perform in vivo electrophysiology and optical recordings.
• Animal Behavior: Design and conduct behavioral experiments combined with optogenetic, chemogenetic, and pharmacological manipulation of neural circuit function.
• Experimental Setup: Develop and maintain behavioral and recording systems.
• Data Analysis: Process and analyze neural and behavioral data (custom coding required).
• Stereotaxic Surgery: Conduct precise stereotaxic injections and implants in mice.
• Transgenic Mouse Colony Management: Maintain and manage breeding colonies of transgenic strains.
• Molecular Biology: Perform molecular cloning, cell culture, and virus generation (AAV, clipped rabies virus).
• Histology: Conduct immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridization.
• Scientific Communication: Present research findings in lab meetings, conferences, and publications.
• Grant & Literature Research: Contribute to grant proposals and stay current with relevant literature.
• Mentoring: Mentor undergraduate students and other early-stage trainees alongside the PI.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in biology, neuroscience, bio engineering, computer science, and any related fields, or MD with the equivalent level of training and lab experience.
• PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
• Desire to succeed in a fast-paced research environment with multiple duties.
• Demonstrated attention to detail, organizational skills, and excellent communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in one or more of the following research areas: systems neuroscience, neurophysiology, computational neuroscience, molecular neuroscience, behavioral neuroscience.
• Experience with basic laboratory protocols including proper handling of mice behavior, stereotaxic surgery, physiology, molecular works, data collection, and data management.
• Experience with data analysis using Matlab, Python, and/or other programming languages.
