Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
This position will advise students, parents, and the general public regarding federal, state, and college wide financial aid resources. Determine initial eligibility in all areas (grants, loans, scholarships, work-study, etc) for individual students. Provide and clarify financial aid information, requirements, and application procedures. Manage campus loan programming, electronic filing of documents and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards presentations. Conduct workshops providing information regarding financial aid policies and procedures to new and continuing students in individual and groups settings, on and off campus.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge and understanding of the community college mission and the financial aid office, particularly as it relates to enrollment and support services
Knowledge of federal and state educational financial aid programs including most recent rules and regulations issued by the Department of Education; ability to interpret student financial aid reports and other verification documents
Knowledge of general accounting procedures including performing reconciliations and project management
Ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-volume deadline driven environment
Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply college policies and procedures, especially as they relate to student financial aid
Knowledge of college curricula and programs
Knowledge of the Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy and procedures for financial aid.
Knowledge of verification procedures and ability to review, interpret and determine documentation as the first level of verification review. Demonstrate understanding of documentation to include the verification worksheet, signed taxes (students and parents), military W-2’s, default letters, Social Security Cards, Immigration & Naturalization Service’s documentation, and other documents as needed and requested
Ability to work accurately with details and organize data and work.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and provide excellent customer service.
Ability to work effectively on a one-to-one basis with students
Ability to work effectively as a team within the financial aid office and student services
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Skills to meet deadlines and complete work with knowledge of effective problem-solving techniques
Knowledge of conflict resolution methods and ability to mediate and resolve conflicts regarding student financial aid
Knowledge and skills in the operation of a PC e-mail communications, experience with a complex, integrated student information system and MS Office software to include configuring and interpreting databases and spreadsheets.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate degree
Experience in a high-volume financial aid customer service environment
Work experience in financial aid in a community college setting
