Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU Department of Surgery is to provide nationally ranked, advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe surgical services and sciences across all levels of care, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’s future surgical specialists.

Chief Purpose of this position: VCU Health Department of Surgery is seeking a general surgeon for our practice at Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) in South Hill, Virginia, who will serve as the Trauma Medical Director at CMH for the development of a Level III trauma center. This position will be within the VCU Acute Care Surgery division and operates within the VCU trauma system network which includes a Level I Trauma Center located in Richmond, Virginia.

Position Responsibilities:

Clinical | The trauma medical director will be an integral part of the general surgery practice and trauma care coverage at Community Memorial Hospital with the opportunity to work at other VCUHS locations including clinical coverage and service at the VCU level I Trauma Center. The candidate must be Board eligible/Board certified in General Surgery. with additional qualifications in surgical critical care is preferred. Must have excellent skills in emergency general surgery, elective community general surgery including minimally invasive procedures.

Administrative | The Trauma Medical Director (TMD) is responsible for the development, growth and oversight of the Trauma Program and Trauma service at the Level III trauma center within the VCU trauma system network and work closely and collaboratively with the Chair of the Trauma System Network. The TMD must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and an understanding of the interdependent roles of various allied health professions. The TMD is responsible for promoting high standards of practice through the development of trauma policies, protocols and practice guidelines, participating in rigorous performance improvement monitoring at the Community Memorial hospital and within the Trauma network. The TMD must be involved in the development of the EMS trauma component in the South Hill region and invested in prehospital personnel training, EMS performance improvement, and prehospital patient safety.

Teaching | This faculty member will have teaching responsibilities for any residents or fellows who may rotate at Community Memorial Hospital or as applicable during rotations at the VCUHS main hospital. The TMD will work closely with the VCU Center for Trauma and Critical Care Education (CTCCE) to provide trauma care education to EMS providers in the region, nursing, residents and faculty of all disciplines involved in the Level III trauma center.

Research | Collaboration with basic science faculty in Surgery, VCUHS Level I Trauma center, and the VCU School of Medicine will be encouraged.

Service | Faculty member will serve on, Divisional, Departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as local and regional Trauma and EMS committees, and in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Required Qualifications:
  • Board Certified in General Surgery
  • Virginia state licensure
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
  • Ability to function in a complex matrixed environment
  • Effective skills in managing conflict
  • Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Surgical critical care is highly preferred
