Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Division of Bariatric & Gastrointestinal Surgery of the Department of Surgery is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.
Chief Purpose of this position: This position is an open rank, non-tenure track faculty position. The incumbent will provide support at the practice in Tappahannock and community expansion to Fredericksburg as well as integrate into existing practice at VCU. Faculty member should possess significant expertise in the broad field of general surgery as well as upper and lower endoscopies. The faculty member will also support the division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Position Responsibilities:
Clinical Clinical responsibility will be in the care of the general surgery patients at Tappahannock as well as VCU. He/she will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice, with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership.
Teaching Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities as a part of their role in an academic medical center setting. Oversight of residents and fellows as well as instruction in General Surgery and applied anatomy and physiology.
Research Faculty member may participate in research activities and/or collaborate with others on research projects and endeavors.
Required Qualifications:
Board certification or eligibility in general surgery
Commitment to teaching and education of medical students and other trainees
Ability to work in a complex matrixed environment with a high emotional intelligence
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
