Job Description:

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years.  It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force.  TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.  The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Position Summary:
The TCC Great Expectations program is designed to help current and former foster youth between the ages of 17 and 24 students transition into college. The Great Expectations Outreach Assistant will introduce prospective TCC students, their parents, social workers, high school guidance counselors and other community partners to program services and TCC’s academic programs, admission and enrollment processes.

This position is temporary and funded through July 31, 2025.

Functional Responsibilities:
Work in collaboration with Great Expectations Coordinator and College staff to host student support programs and events
Manage case load of Great Expectation students
Serve as a liaison between the College and external partners.
Plan, implement and attend virtual and in-person information sessions/fairs at high schools, group homes, social services agencies, and community events in the Hampton Roads area.
Provide overview of program requirements and services.
Minimum Qualifications:

Excellent verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal skills
Experience working with marginalized populations
Ability to work with diverse populations
Ability to work independently
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to travel to various Hampton Roads community locations
Ability to work flexible schedule
Ability to comply with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) policy guidelines
Additional Considerations:

Experience working with foster youth
Experience working in social services agency
Demonstrated knowledge of video conferencing platforms (e.g. Zoom)
Experience in performing recruiting activities and events
Demonstrated understanding of foster care system
