Greener Housing Coalition Infrastructure Intern-Remote optional (Student Wage or Staff Wage)

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Virginia is seeking applications for a Greener Housing Coalition Infrastructure Intern.

This position will support the start-up of UVA’s student-led Greener Housing Coalition (GHC). The Greener Housing Coalition is an organization started by UVA students in 2020, as an effort aimed at making off-grounds student housing more sustainable. While the university has a stated goal to become carbon neutral by 2030 and fossil fuel free by 2050, off-grounds student housing is not under the purview of the university. Yet, 70% of UVA students live off-grounds, in residences with significant greenhouse gas profiles. The student-led Greener Housing Coalition seeks to mirror the university’s progress towards reducing the climate impact of its operations, by focusing upon the emissions of student residences in the Charlottesville community.

To support GHC efforts, a UVA student intern will spend their summer constructing a data management infrastructure for the organization. If the GHC wants to know the impact of its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it must calculate a starting level of emissions and track reduction efforts. All such data, on individual residences in the community, must be recorded securely and available for use by the initiative.

The intern will consult with UVA’s Office of Sustainability and Facilities Management operation to understand how building emissions at the university are tracked. Using insight from those discussions and other information about best practices in data handling, the student will set up and begin to populate the digital database infrastructure needed to support GHC efforts.

During the summer, development of a geographic information system (GIS) resource is also envisioned. Staff within UVA’s Scholars Lab are available as a resource for GIS development. GIS data layers could ultimately hold a) building and street locations of off-grounds residences, b) property ownership and occupancy level, c) energy and water utility costs, d) carbon footprint per residence, e) solar exposure and installed solar resource data, f) energy infrastructure for residences (e.g., heating / cooling system data), and g) vehicle charging infrastructure data. The GIS resource would also be accessible to illustrate yearly progress in carbon reductions.

During the summer, student leaders of GHC will be available to plan and guide intern efforts. The faculty chair of the GHC Advisory Board will also be available for frequent consultations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must be a currently enrolled in an undergraduate program with demonstrated skills in developing cyber-secure, cloud-based database and GIS resources. Strong candidates will be self-directed, highly-motivated, professional individuals, committed to delivering a well-functioning solution at the end of the summer.

This position will start between May 15 and June 15, 2022. It will last 8 - 10 weeks (8 weeks @ 40 hours/wk or 10 weeks @ 32 hours/wk).

Work can take place in person in Charlottesville or remotely.

Pay rate: $15 per hour
