The Office of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for the position of Hazardous Materials Technician. This position will support departmental efforts to promote the safe and compliant conduct of research, education, and patient care services across the UVA community. The Hazardous Materials Technician serves as a resource to the University by collecting hazardous and non-hazardous materials from sites across Grounds while using analytical instrumentation to conduct surveys of chemical fume hoods and environmental conditions. Technicians consolidate hazardous and non-hazardous materials, perform emergency response duties, and answer basic materials-related questions.

Duties for this position include (but are not limited to):
  • Safely collect hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Inspect waste containers to ensure proper labeling, containerization, and documentation prior to collection.
  • Assist the UVA community by answering questions about hazardous materials and waste and assist clients with best safety practices. Perform cursory safety inspections of the laboratory environment and waste storage areas during the pickup process.
  • Transport hazardous materials and waste to the UVA Special Materials Handling Facility (SMHF) in a manner that is safe and compliant with US Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements.
  • Safely collects and transports Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) from medical center and other collection points to the Special Materials Handling Facility (SMHF). Monitors inventory of EHS supplied RMW containers and distributes supplies as needed.
  • Under the guidance from the supervisor, performs the logging, segregation, labeling, bulking and storage of hazardous waste in a manner that is safe, efficient and compliant with applicable regulations and policies.
  • Performs chemical fume hood surveys. The primary engineering device utilized to protect personnel from chemical exposure is the chemical fume hood (CFH). CFH’s are surveyed on an annual basis to determine if they are operating satisfactorily, and their operation is certified. The technician will be trained on equipment and methods used to perform these surveys and will conduct them throughout university facilities on an independent basis. The survey results will be reviewed by the Supervising Industrial Hygienist upon updating a database. CFH certifiers will be required to help identify why a CFH fails certification and place the appropriate work order request with Facilities Management.
  • Operate analytical instrumentation to assess atmospheric or environmental conditions.
  • Wash reusable containers and label for reuse and dispose of non-reusable containers.
  • Respond to hazardous material spills and other loss of containment events under supervision of Hazardous Materials Supervisor, or Program Manager.
  • Perform general upkeep of SMHF work areas.
  • Legally operate hazardous materials trucks and vehicles.


Additional Duties:
  • Complete job duties and responsibilities while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including a respirator; work safely with and around hazardous materials (e.g., chemical, biological, radioactive).
  • Comfortable working in a variety of workspaces including patient care, animal, research laboratories and outdoors. Environments may include elevated temperature, possible chemical exposure during chemical waste operations, potential radiation exposure in laboratory or clinical environment, potential exposure to blood/body fluids, walking and/or standing on concrete services.
  • Perform accurate field measurements, data calculations, results interpretation, and transcribe values into a database; demonstrate a level of mechanical aptitude and keen observation; possess strong record-keeping capabilities.
  • Communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing; demonstrate ability and experience in listening, communicating, and relating to all members of a university community on a professional level.
  • Drive all department vehicles including box trucks and large cargo vans in accordance with all state and university policies.
  • Be motivated to accomplish work responsibilities both independently and as a collaborative, professional and respectful EHS team member.
  • Meet all physical requirements including lifting 50lbs, handling and manipulating materials, and walking and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Work a schedule that may include on-call responsibilities to cover holiday, weekend and after hour response; reliability, flexibility, and a service-oriented approach are required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and basic internet browsers.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: At least one year of relevant work experience is required. Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience with hazardous materials.
  • Must have completed 40 hours of EPA HAZWOPER training and Bloodborne Pathogen training or commit to completing within six months of hire.
  • License: A valid, un-restricted Virginia Driver's License, or the ability to obtain an un-restricted Virginia Driver's License within 90 days of hire.
  • Vaccination: This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002 .

Required Immunization:

Employees will be required to comply with the Health System’s new immunization policy - OCH-002 : Occupational Health Screening and Maintenance.

Physical Demands:

Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in the course of job tasks. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties. Must be able to wear a tight-fitting respirator as required.

Anticipated Hiring Salary : $17.49 - $21.16 per hour ($36,379 - $44,012 annually); commensurate with education and experience.
