The University of Virginia's Facilities Management Power and Light team is seeking a High Voltage Electrician. Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

Responsibilities:
  • Inspect, maintain, test, repair, operate, troubleshoot and replace all 4160V, 12.5KV, and 35KV apparatus on all campus sites.
  • This includes, but is not limited to, switching high voltage and preparing the switching procedures. Maintenance and installation of high voltage equipment includes switches, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, distribution lines, cables, and cable terminations. High voltage relay calibration, cable splicing and cable terminating are preferred skills.
  • This position handles high voltage electric and works in man holes and heat tunnels which have different temperatures. They work around machinery in mechanical spaces and may be required to work in high places from a bucket truck.
  • This position handles installation of new electrical concrete encased ductbanks. Experience in digging/excavation practices and laws is required. This includes but not limited to operating medium duty machinery to excavate such as trencher (Ditch Witch), mini excavator, and backhoe.
  • This position handles installation of new light pole fixtures. This includes but not limited to excavation, forming concrete bases, cabling and installation of photocells.
  • This position also works in confined spaces and kneels, squats, and bends while working on equipment. Pushing, pulling, the use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while running cables.
  • Coordinate appropriate repairs with other trades at Facilities’ Services. Work with all other trades to coordinate shutdowns and maintain all utilities and buildings in good working order.
  • Maintain Utilities support systems, such as pumps, VFDs, diesel generators, Photovoltaic (PV) systems/ arrays, turbine generators, street lights, crosswalk lights and other electrical systems. Respond to high voltage requests; assist with SCADA installations.
  • Consult lead/supervisor/Associate Director who administer requirements and standards for the modification of projects.
  • Interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements. Support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments.
  • Keep accurate work records and complete paper work in a neat and timely manner.
  • Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or superintendent. Obtain materials and equipment as required.
  • Adhere to all University and departmental safety guidelines.
  • Attend job-related safety training as required.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and NEC high voltage regulations and 40 hours of documented high voltage safety training required.
  • Knowledge of HV PPE and HV testing procedures required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including but not limited to snow removal (shoveling or operating a snow blower).


Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a Journey or Master level electrical license.
  • Must have completed a five year electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent.
  • Must be able to interpret complicated circuitry designs and have a good understanding of electronic devices such as relays and VFD’s.
  • Must be willing and able to work in confined spaces such as vaults and manholes and be able to work in high lifts to reach overhead lines/lights.
  • Must be able to lift 75 pound objects and maneuver much heavier objects such as manhole covers.
  • Must possess valid Virginia driver’s license.
  • Must be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, rotating swing shift and holidays.
  • Must adhere to FM work rules and Code of Conduct.
  • Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
  • Must possess knowledge and ability to utilize correct tools, techniques and methods for handling specific electrical projects by applying thorough knowledge of codes and the skills of a craftsperson.
  • Ability to interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
  • Ability to operate electrical machines, equipment and other hand and/or power tools needed to perform skill- related job tasks.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and gain access to areas that normally require stairs, ladders and scaffolding, using specific methods to perform job tasks.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel and craft personnel, in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize requirements; able to work and support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize interference with others.
  • Ability to interpret information from equipment manufacturers manuals, service requests, layout sketches, blueprints, appropriate state and local government codes, trade-specific manuals and practices and to determine how the fixture or equipment should perform.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and use color codes effectively.
  • Ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and two-way radio.
  • Ability to execute all job assignments in a timely manner.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Rigging experience.
  • Experience in operating medium duty crane.
  • Must have three years high voltage experience and possess Hard Splices and Pre-Formed Splice Kits certification issued by a licensed school or approved training program.
  • Must be trained on the use of high lifts and bucket truck.


Compensation:

The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00 per hour ($52,000 - $62,400 per year) . This is a full-time position with UVA benefits . Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:

Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties.
