The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library seeks a Historical Collections Manager and Curator to lead its Historical Collections and Services Department. Reporting to the Director of the Health Sciences Library, this position will be responsible for stewarding the library’s special collections and supporting programs at the University of Virginia related to the history of the health sciences.
The Historical Collections Manager and Curator supervises a full-time professional archivist. They cultivate opportunities for new partnerships with stakeholders, collaborate with special collections colleagues across the University of Virginia, and develop relationships with donors. This position works with the Library Director and Finance Manager to manage the financial and tangible assets of the department and participates in the Health Sciences Library’s leadership council. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and collaboratively.
The Historical Collections and Services Department acquires, preserves, promotes, and makes accessible a collection of institutional archives, manuscripts, photographs, born-digital assets, and other rare and unique materials. The department seeks out opportunities to support education programs, readily making collections available to faculty for course instruction. Opportunities to develop exhibits and support research initiatives at the University, related to the history of the health sciences, are also explored. In recent years, the department has focused on collecting materials related to the 200-year history of UVA Health. Particular attention has been paid to resources that document traditionally underrepresented voices.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops and implements policies for the Historical Collections and Services Department at the Health Sciences Library
Supervises the acquisition, preservation, and dissemination of Historical Collections located at the Health Sciences Library
Provides library users with general reference and expert assistance in historical research
Provides users with expert knowledge about the history of UVA Health
Support for education and outreach programs related to the history of the health sciences at the University of Virginia
Promotes and generates interest in the Historical Collections within and outside of the University of Virginia
Remains aware of and seeks out opportunities for new partnerships with the library's user community
Works with the Library Director and the Library's Finance Manager to manage the financial and tangible assets of the department
Identifies and assists in the cultivation of potential donors to support department collections and services
Participates and collaborates with the Health Sciences Library’s leadership team
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Master's degree in Library Science or other academic discipline Experience: 5 years of relevant experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
MLIS/MLS degree from an ALA accredited program
Special collections and archives experience in the health sciences
Experience in project planning and management
Experience with analog and digital collections management
Experience in donor relations and growing philanthropic support
Knowledge of current and emerging applications to archival management and access (i.e., EAD, digitization, etc.)
Familiarity with legal, privacy, and ethical issues associated with archiving and providing access to digital and print content
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $63,000 - $73,000, commensurate with education and experience. For more information on the benefits at UVA, visit https://hr.virginia.edu/benefits .
