Job Description:

The Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth and strengthen families and communities across the Commonwealth.

DJJ's Division of Education is seeking a qualified History and Social Sciences Teacher to provide high-quality, standards-based instruction that supports the individual learning needs of students and aligns with the Commonwealth's educational standards, statutes, and program certification requirements.

The teacher will design and deliver engaging, research-based instruction, foster a safe, respectful, and student-centered learning environment, and use student data to inform instruction, monitor progress, and promote academic success.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

(1) Earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in History and Social Sciences; or

(2) Earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and completed 51 semester hours of coursework distributed in each of the following areas: History, including a major in history or 18 semester hours in history with coursework in American history, Virginia history, and world history (which may include African American history); Political Science, including a major in political science or 18 semester hours in political science with coursework in American government (state and local government); Geography, including nine semester hours; and Economics, including six semester hours. All candidates must also have completed instruction in African American history, either as part of the degree program or through other department-approved alternatives.

Licensure:

Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License with an endorsement in History and Social Sciences.

Additional Considerations

Experience as a History and Social Sciences Teacher in a secondary setting preferred; Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred.

Candidates whose bachelor's degree does not align with the content area must demonstrate content proficiency through required assessments prior to submission for provisional licensure, with successful assessment completion to take place within the first six months of employment.
