Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds, as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
The FM Housing Zone has an exciting opening for a HVAC professional. The position will be filled either as an HVAC Mechanic or HVAC Senior Assistant depending on the credentials and experience of the finalist selected.
An HVAC SENIOR ASSISTANT assists HVAC Mechanics with HVAC repairs and works independently as appropriate, cleans job sites, trains on more advanced installations and emergency repairs, and follows all customer service and safety protocols. A high school diploma is required with a minimum of four years of related experience with HVAC installations and repair. The incumbent hired at this level will be considered for promotion once they have attained the required experience and licensure for the next level. A valid driver’s license, with a positive points balance is also required.
HVAC MECHANICS perform journey level installation, repair, and maintenance on a variety of package and central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Other duties include preventative maintenance; servicing, overhauling, and maintaining a variety of window and small package units or large central units; and determining equipment needs. A high school diploma is required along with a minimum of four years of experience in the HVAC trade. Additionally, to be considered, candidates MUST have the HVAC journeyman or higher license. A valid driver’s license, with a positive points balance is also required.
Job Description
HVAC Senior Assistant Duties Include:
Perform HVAC repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, and temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.
Develop an increasing knowledge of types of material and equipment used for the various utility systems involved in University projects.
Maintain accurate records on time tickets, job requests, and work orders.
Determine material and equipment for specific jobs, as well as initiate purchase orders.
Maintain compliance with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Use personal safety equipment as instructed, and act in accordance with safety guidelines.
Meet with and respond to customer requests on work status in coordination with supervisor.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
HVAC Mechanic Duties Include :
Perform HVAC installation and repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, and temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.
Specify, estimate, and install equipment, refrigeration, and systems in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.
Respond to emergency requests.
Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.
Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code, and The Joint Commission.
Assist other trades and become familiar with various equipment and sequence of operation.
Perform miscellaneous duties such as snow and ice removal, as assigned by the supervisor.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent for both levels.
Experience: Four years of related HVAC experience. Experience in residential service environments highly preferred.
Licensure: Journeyman or higher HVAC license to be considered for the HVAC Mechanic level. Valid Driver's license, with positive points balance.
For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the following background checks: criminal, sexual offender and DMV.
Compensation:
HVAC Senior Assistant: $21.50 - $25.50 Hourly ($44,720.00 - $53,040.00 Annually) . Employees at this level, new to the University, are eligible for a $1,500.00 sign on bonus.
HVAC Mechanic: The hiring range for this position is. $22.50 - $28.00 per hour (46,800.00 - $58,240.00 per year). Employees at this level, new to the University, are eligible for a $2,500.00 sign on bonus

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employee will be required to crawl, kneel, squat, bend and twist in order to perform their work. Employee must travel around job sites. Employee will work with materials of different weights and perform repetitive motions.
