Job Description:
Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.

Danville Community College seeks a dedicated and student-centered Information Systems Technology Instructor to provide high-quality instruction in Information Systems Technology and related areas. The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses that prepare students for employment and advancement in information technology fields, including networking, cybersecurity, database management, cloud computing, programming, systems administration, and technical support.

The Instructor will support the college's mission by fostering student success, maintaining academic excellence, collaborating with business and industry partners, and contributing to program development and assessment activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruction and Student Success
  • Teach Information Systems Technology courses in classroom, laboratory, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Develop and maintain course syllabi, assessments, and instructional materials aligned with curriculum requirements.
  • Utilize innovative and technology-enhanced teaching methodologies.
  • Advise and mentor students regarding academic progress, career pathways, and industry certifications.
  • Maintain office hours and provide timely feedback to students.
  • Assess student learning outcomes and implement continuous improvement strategies.
  • Maintain and monitor lab area for daily instructional activities including equipment setup.
  • Prepare for and instruct established and approved curriculum and lesson plans to students in a professional manner.
  • Must possess ability to prepare/adjust curriculum and training content to relate to various audiences.
  • Review and discuss syllabi requirements at the start of each term with students.
  • Answer all student questions as they arise to ensure student understanding and completion of material for Industrial Maintenance.
  • Ensure students are aware of safety policies and monitor for correct procedures.
  • Maintain professionalism within the classroom and coach students on their professionalism.
  • Manage all classroom activity including lecturing, student assistance, and lab instruction.
  • Ensure students are attending lab and online coursework.
  • Resolve attendance issues as needed.
  • Monitor student grades, and all student interactions in student files and on database in a timely manner.
  • Advise students on issues affecting their education and provide guidance as needed.

Program Development

  • Participate in curriculum review and program improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of new courses and workforce training opportunities.
  • Maintain currency in emerging technologies and industry trends.
  • Support accreditation, assessment, and compliance requirements.

College Service

  • Serve on college committees and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Support student recruitment, retention, and outreach activities.
  • Collaborate with local employers and workforce development partners.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain appropriate certifications.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • AAS degree in teaching field
  • 2 years of related occupational experience
  • Credentialed as a CISCO Certified Instructor
  • Knowledge of information technology systems, infrastructure, and applications
  • Ability to teach technical concepts to diverse student populations
  • Proficiency with computer hardware, software, networking, cybersecurity, and cloud technologies
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to establish collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student engagement
  • Background in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Network Administration, or a closely related field from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information systems technologies and practices
  • Ability to teach a variety of courses within the Information Systems Technology curriculum
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience using instructional technologies and learning management systems
  • Willingness to develop and build industry relationships
  • Commitment to the Community College mission

Additional Considerations:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, and/or Cybersecurity
  • Industry experience in information technology, networking, cybersecurity, cloud computing, systems administration, software development, or related areas
  • Previous teaching or training experience in higher education, workforce development, or corporate training environments
  • Current industry certifications such as:
    • CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, CySA+
    • Cisco CCNA
    • Microsoft Azure Certifications AWS Certifications
    • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
    • Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
  • Experience with online and hybrid course delivery
  • Experience in higher education
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred.
  • Curriculum development experience is preferred.
