Job Description
The Virginia Tech National Security Institute is seeking applicants for an IT Support Technician to provide operations support to the quickly growing Institute. The successful candidate will be a detail oriented individual, have strong problem-solving skills, and be able to execute a diverse set of tasks with limited direction. Additionally, this person will have strong interpersonal skills to communicate with other personnel in the Institute. This position reports to the Director of IT. The institute conducts research that primarily focuses on supporting the national security community, and therefore US citizenship is required for this position.
Required Qualifications
• Strong problem solving skills, and the ability to execute tasks with limited direction.
• Demonstrated technical ability to troubleshoot complex hardware and software issues with desktops, laptops, and servers.
• Experience using Microsoft Windows OS and applications such as Microsoft Office, Matlab, adobe acrobat, Office 365, MacOS, PowerShell, basic Linux commands, etc.
• Experience with OS deployment and configuration tools such as Microsoft MDT and Ansible.
• Experience with Active Directory and User account provisioning and permissions.
• Knowledge of fundamental networking concepts (tcp/ip, vlan, etc).
• Ability to multitask and work in a dynamic team environment.
• Fluency with digital collaboration tools such as M365 email, MS teams, zoom, and electronic calendars.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to lift and move up to 50lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
• An earned B.S. or B.A. degree or equivalent experience in an IT related position.
• Moderate to advanced experience working in a unix/linux environment i.e. shell scripting, ansible playbook composition, working in VIM, etc.
• Experience with technical writing, particularly in engineering or the sciences.
• Experience providing administrative support in an academic environment.
