Job Duties

The Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) of the Supreme Court of Virginia is seeking applicants for a full-time staff attorney to work in the Richmond office and serve as Program Director for the Judicial Performance Evaluation Program, which evaluates Virginia’s justices and judges.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this position will include (i) managing the Judicial Performance Evaluation (JPE) Program, including working with the JPE Advisory Committee and its subcommittees; (ii) supervising staff in the implementation of the Supreme Court’s Judicial Disqualification Policy, including the designation of active judges and the designation and recall of retired judges throughout the Commonwealth; (iii) assisting the Assistant Executive Secretary and Counsel in responding to a variety of legal issues affecting OES and the judicial branch; (iv) assisting other OES departments on special assignments as needed.  Occasional overnight travel is required.

Minimum Qualifications

The most competitive candidates will possess:

Applicants must: be licensed to practice law in Virginia and be in good standing with the Virginia State Bar; possess excellent analytical, oral, and written communication skills, and have a sound working knowledge of Virginia court operations and the legal system; have the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with the bench, bar, and legislature; be competent at public speaking and comfortable with presenting to large groups, including judges and bar associations; and be familiar with Microsoft Office suite.
