The Leclerc Laboratory at the University of Virginia, Department of Anesthesiology, seeks applications for a Lab and Research Technician 1 or 2, Applicants will be considered for a Lab and Research Technician position 1 or 2 based on the degree of their prior education and laboratory experience.

Department of Anesthesiology provides an environment where expertise and passions thrive, utilizing our extraordinary team of anesthesia physicians, trainees, nurses and staff to advance patient care within UVA Health. With excellence in physician leadership, research, education and innovations, we strive to improve perioperative outcomes, establish unparalleled practices in patient care, and advance the field of anesthesiology globally. Clinical and Basic Science Research are an essential part of the mission in the UVA Department of Anesthesiology.

The Leclerc Lab focuses on elucidating the mechanisms for the clearance of neurotoxic metabolites from the brain following hemorrhagic stroke. Normally, blood is not present within the brain aside from that which is contained within the vasculature. When bleeding occurs, extravascular red blood cells become unstable and release a myriad of neurotoxic molecules. The glymphatic pathway is a special clearance pathway within the brain that facilitates bulk flow washout of molecules to the periphery. This research focuses on how various anesthetic paradigms modulate the glymphatic pathway to augment the clearance of neurotoxic metabolites after hemorrhagic stroke.

The experiments proposed utilize cutting-edge in vivo and in vitro techniques and represent a unique research niche that bridges the fields of Anesthesiology and Neuroscience. This position will require the ability to perform both routine lab functions as well as more advanced neuroscience procedures and protocols. Routine lab functions may include managing the mouse colony, genotyping, making solutions, ordering lab supplies, maintaining inventories, and organizing and maintaining records and lab SOPs. Advanced neuroscience procedures may include performing stereotaxic and other survival surgeries on mice, two photon microscopy, complex brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocols, administering pharmaceutical agents to mice, neurobehavioral monitoring of mice, and performing sectioning, histology, western blotting, and other forms of microscopy. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

This position will report to the Principal Investigator (PI). All team members meet individually with the PI at least weekly to summarize their progress and troubleshoot their projects. They will also work closely with other lab members and team members within the Departments of Neuroscience and Anesthesiology.
