The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks either a Lab and Research Technician 2 OR Lab Specialist (depending on qualifications) to assist investigators in the Bayliss Lab with experiments designed to investigate the cell and molecular biology, and physiological function, of brainstem respiratory neurons. The individual will predominantly be maintaining mouse colonies, performing molecular and histological assays, and performing rodent-based behavioral testing. The preferred candidate will be able to synthesize information, provide advice, and address needs independently.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES The primary focus of the work may include but is not limited to the following:
Perform standard molecular biology (transformation, plasmid preparation, mutagenesis, and sub-cloning).
Learn/implement cell culture approaches for preparation of viral constructs or recording.
Perform a variety of experimental procedures and assist in evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives (e.g., behavioral assays, histochemical assays).
Laboratory Maintenance and General Duties
Maintain a clean laboratory area and assist with overall laboratory maintenance.
Make buffers and other reagents.
Maintain a laboratory notebook.
Ordering and Purchasing
Process purchases for the lab using UVA Marketplace.
Interact with vendors to determine appropriate products.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Lab and Research Technician 2
Education: Associate's degree
Experience:At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience.Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $15.25 - $19, commensurate with education and experience.
Lab Specialist
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $17.50 - $21.75, commensurate with education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in biology, chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline.
Four or more years of laboratory experience (which may include student experience) in an academic or industrial laboratory setting.
Knowledge of general lab procedures, basic safety precautions, and lab equipment.
Experience with a variety of cellular, molecular, and biochemical techniques.
Experience working with live animals in an academic biomedical research environment.
Experience with mouse husbandry and colony management.
Experience with histochemical approaches.
Experience with Filemaker, GraphPad PRISM, Adobe Acrobat, and Photoshop.
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position can require extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
