The University of Virginia seeks a Lab Specialist to support the Department of Anesthesiology in the laboratory of Dr. Manoj Patel. The department’s research efforts involve dozens of faculty, residents, and staff in basic science and clinical research efforts. Our clinical investigators and Ph.D. researchers maintain active basic science laboratories conducting anesthesiology-related investigations with support from post-docs, fellows, residents, and graduate students. Many of our faculty members are involved in clinical research, supported by a staff of clinical research coordinators and post doctorate research fellows. The Technology in Anesthesia and Critical Care Group focuses attention on biomedical devices and includes faculty from the School of Engineering and Applied Science as well as the School of Medicine. The Patel lab specializes in epilepsy and utilizes a number of epilepsy rodent models.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of projects. Schedule and maintain records of equipment/facilities. May be responsible for operations of specialized labs or research areas within departments and/or field work and related data analyses for research projects. May assemble, test, calibrate, clean, or make minor repairs to equipment.
  • Assist in evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives.
  • Perform small animal surgery and patch clamp electrophysiology experiments.
  • Analyze EEG recordings.
  • Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software. Evaluate experiment results using statistical and multivariate analyses. Research, compile, and maintain complex statistical, numerical, and computerized reports.
  • Perform library and literature research.
  • Assist in instructing lab academic sections in lab methods, procedures, and safety.
  • Explain work instructions and may adapt general methods and procedures in order to meet the needs of the research.
  • Assist in training other staff members on procedures.
  • Perform duties similar to Lab Specialist employees, such as helping Principal Investigators coordinate research projects, performing experimental procedures, collecting information and data, and preparing tissues and specimens for procedures.
  • Train users in equipment operation and research techniques; and explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes.
  • May supervise research support personnel and manage budgets.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Qualified candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of previous lab experience, 6 years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree. Experience with handling rodents is essential.

Preferred Skills:
  • Ability to perform in vivo mouse work including - IV and IP injections.
  • Experience with stereotaxic surgery equipment, brain injection of viruses.

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $47,000 - $58,000 commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
