The Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, at the University of Virginia’ (UVA) School of Medicine, is seeking a Lab Specialist Intermediate to work in Dr. Anne Sperling’s laboratory. The Sperling lab studies the role of the immune system in lung diseases such as asthma and pulmonary fibrosis. The lab specialist intermediate will be an important member of the research team, direct independent research projects, direct and manage the lab including a small animal colony. Lab Specialist Intermediate employees provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. Will handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab specialist intermediate employees operate independently with minimal supervision.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Perform and direct research and provides laboratory support to the research interests of Dr. Anne Sperling.
• Supervise other technicians and assist in training new personnel and students.
• Oversee mouse colony and assists lab technician and trainees with maintenance of strains, and genotyping.
• Oversee laboratory inventory and equipment, ordering supplies, and training students on laboratory procedures when required.
• Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to research staff in testing, determinations, and experiments.
• Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.
• May perform certain procedures on small lab animals.
• Assist with training other staff members on procedures; may supervise students or volunteers.
• Assist Principal Investigator with regulatory responsibilities.
• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualified candidates must have:
Education
: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Six years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. Nine years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Required knowledge, skills abilities:
• Knowledge of general lab procedures, including the ability to modify and develop lab procedures.
• Ability to organize samples sets and data sets using computerized databases.
• Ability to plan and execute tasks of experiments.
• Ability to independently conduct laboratory experiments.

Physical demands:

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

This position will remain open until filled. This position is restricted and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.
