The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine seeks candidates for a Lab Tech 2 to participate in studies of the role of clonal hematopoiesis in age-related diseases. This position provides scientific/technical support to a large cardiovascular research laboratory consisting of a mixture of graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and technical staff. The tasks involve a combination of interfacing with clinicians and the coordination of activities involving ultra-deep DNA sequencing to examine the associations between somatic mutations and disease features in patient cohorts.

This position is ideal for an individual who wants to gain clinically relevant research experience prior to entering graduate or medical school. UVA students, graduating in May, with a science background are strongly encouraged to apply.

Preferred experience includes:
  • Management of complex research-based laboratory; protocol and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) development and maintenance.
  • General biological procedures and techniques.
  • Training of faculty and staff.
  • Management of multiple programs and resources or a centralized/specialized core.
  • Management of Quality Control and Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Directing and validating compliance with IRB, GLP, EH&S and other local, federal or sponsor-driven regulations and policies.
  • Expertise in analyzing next generation sequencing data and expertise in R and/or other programming language (e.g. python).


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Associate’s degree.

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student, experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelors degree in a science related field
  • An ability to work both independently and with others in a highly collaborative team-based environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills; general computer skills.
  • Entry-level applicants with no specific lab experience are welcomed provided they have a strong science background.


The position will remain open until filled. This is an Non-Exempt, benefitted position.
