The Cliffe Lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Laboratory Technician level 2 to work on projects investigating Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection in neurons and mechanisms of latent infection. The lab technician will work closely with the PI to use virology, molecular biology and cell biology techniques to study gene regulation during HSV reactivation from latency. Research activities will include, but not be limited to, propagating and titrating virus stocks, routine tissue culture, general molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation, RT-PCR) and animal work. The lab technician will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance. This includes training of other personnel, maintaining mouse colonies, ordering supplies, preparing stock solutions, organizing and maintaining virus stocks and assisting the PI with environmental health and safety compliance.This position also includes support activities such as maintenance of cell lines and preparation of reagents for the laboratory, management of safety training and records, and the training of undergraduate and graduate researchers.
Responsibilities can include:
The incumbent will attend weekly meetings with the Principal Investigator to discuss experimental results, conducts literature searches, and presents results in lab meetings.
The incumbent works under supervision, independently and ethically, documents all research data appropriately, and assists other members of the lab.
Assist in evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives.
Assist in training other staff members on procedures.
Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education : B.S. degree in biology, or a related field
Experience : One year of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while a student. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
Preferred Requirements
Experience : Preference will be given to candidates with experience in a Virology lab working with primary neurons, prior animal work and experience with tissue culture techniques. Preference will also be give to candidates with attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills.

Physical Demands
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
