The Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Virginia is currently seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work in the lab of Dr. Amy Mathers. The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical lab support by performing complex lab and research related tasks. This person would act as a specialist on research methods and equipment functions specific to research tasks. This work, which covers both microbiological and molecular techniques, primarily focuses on researching and advancing the science of antimicrobial resistance genes.
An effective candidate will work with all members of the lab team to assist in all aspects of conducting experiments. This individual should also be able to work independently and be self- guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental challenges. This candidate should also be able to work well with other laboratory departments as they will work regularity in cooperation with other labs at the UVA Medical Center. This position could provide opportunities in furthering certifications/education as the candidate so desires.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Applies knowledge of scientific/technical principles, practices, and regulatory requirements of functional areas.
Performs a variety of procedures supporting clinical, research, field research, service or regulatory and/or diagnostic laboratory programs.
Duties may include performing standardized or specialized scientific or clinical procedures, performing preliminary procedures to prepare, expedite, and facilitate further scientific examination and training, analysis and compilation of data, communicating findings/research results, repairing and maintaining equipment and ordering supplies.
May have contact with private business, other state agencies or government entities, faculty, students and researchers, and/or the general public to communicate results and explain laboratory procedures or regulatory requirements.
Performing microbiology assays like antibiotic susceptibility testing and genomic assays like PCR and next generation sequencing.
Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports and perform literature reviews.
Assist in specimen collection outside of the laboratory.
Present work at lab meetings and conferences and participate in grant applications and manuscripts for publishing.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualified candidates must have:
Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience:At least three years of lab experience which may include student experience.Six years of experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
