Job Description
Reporting to the Chemical Hygiene Officer, the Laboratory Inspector will ensure safe laboratory operations by university personnel by assisting in the annual laboratory inspection process. Assist with the administration of the laboratory safety, radiation safety, shipping, fume hood, and safety shower programs. Interpretation and application of the regulations. Assist in the operation of existing safety programs, and assist in the enforcement/promotion of university policy.
Required Qualifications
Advanced degree or Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field and/or equivalent level of related work experience. Working knowledge of OSHA Laboratory Safety Standard. Working knowledge of radiation standards and regulations. Working knowledge of DOT and IATA shipping regulations. Demonstrated effective communication skills. Knowledge of computers and software. Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree with an emphasis on science, engineering, or health physics. Laboratory safety experience in an academic environment. Radiation safety experience in an academic environment, radiation safety experience with nuclear medicine, and x-ray producing equipment. Familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus. Chemical shipping experience.

Must be able to move and handle up to 50 pounds unassisted safely. Must be able to walk/stand for long periods. Must be able to travel to work sites and stand, lift, reach, push/pull, walk, climb, stoop, and bend during site visits. The work environment may involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following established safety precautions. Ability to use PPE (including wearing a respirator) as required per safety procedures. Repetitive movement through the use of computer/keyboarding. Must have a criminal background check. Must have a driver's license check. Emergency Personnel health &; safety-related. Eligible for telecommuting. Must have an acceptable and safe driving record. Must be able to perform job duties beyond the normal work schedule, as needed. On occasion, may have off-campus travel that may require an overnight stay.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
