The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine seeks candidates for a Laboratory Tech, Laboratory Specialist or Laboratory Specialist Intermediate to participate in studies of the role of clonal hematopoiesis in age-related diseases. This position provides scientific/technical support to a large cardiovascular research laboratory consisting of a mixture of graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and technical staff. The tasks involve a combination of general laboratory management and the coordination of activities involving ultra-deep DNA sequencing to examine the associations between somatic mutations and disease features in patient cohorts.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Design and optimize laboratory procedures.
  • Conduct experiments
  • Record and analyze results
  • Providing training on laboratory techniques
  • Supervise laboratory technicians
  • Manage common lab space and resources.
  • Serve as lab contact person for the different university offices (CVRC, safety, etc.) and sales representatives.
  • Participate in reparation of IRB protocol applications.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Preferred experience includes:
  • Management of complex research-based laboratory; protocol and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) development and maintenance.
  • General biological procedures and techniques.
  • Training of faculty and staff.
  • Management of multiple programs and resources or a centralized/specialized core.
  • Management of Quality Control and Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Directing and validating compliance with IRB, GLP, EH&S and other local, federal or sponsor-driven regulations and policies.
  • Expertise in analyzing next generation sequencing data and expertise in R and/or other programming language (e.g. python).
  • The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills.
  • Preference is given to those with an understanding of genetics and computational analyses.


Minimum Requirements for Lab Technician 2:
Education: Associate’s degree.
Experience: At least two years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Minimum Requirements for Lab Specialist:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Three years of experience, which may include student experience. Six years of experience in a science, related field accepted in lieu of degree.
The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills. Preference to those with histological understanding.

Minimum Requirements for Lab Specialist:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Three years of experience, which may include student experience. Six years of experience in a science, related field accepted in lieu of degree.
The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills. Preference to those with histological understanding.

Minimum Requirements for Lab Specialist Intermediate:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Six years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. Nine years of experience accepted in lieu of degree. Experience gained as a student may be considered.

Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
