The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA) within the School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks applications for Laboratory Tech to support the Price Lab. Dr. Price's research program centers on the development and implementation of image-guided drug and gene delivery systems for treating cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

The successful candidate will be responsible for 1) Operating focused-ultrasound (FUS) therapy preclinical systems and 2) Managing and monitoring animal cohorts and supporting biological experiments.
The tasks associated with these two responsibilities include
Animal husbandry
Job will include briefly monitoring the health of small cohorts of animals on a daily basis, including weekends, during experiments
Support pre-clinical animal experiments for research projects
At direction of Principal Investigator or senior staff, perform preclinical focused-ultrasound treatments, including preparation of the FUS systems for experiments
Operate, adjust, and perform quality control of FUS systems for experiments
Manage experimental schedules of the different FUS systems and keep records of their usage
Support with surgical procedures on small laboratory animals
Taking notes of experimental procedures and on observations made during post-operative or treatment periods.
Contribute to data analysis and report writing
Learn new techniques to prepare reagents, solution etc. as directed
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree is required. Preference will be given to candidates with degrees in engineering or related fields.
Lab experience is preferred, this can include student experience.
Familiarity with ultrasound imaging is preferred.
Function independently in a fast-paced environment with a strong attention to detail
Work well within a team environment and act in a professional manner
Ability to learn new techniques
Flexibility with an alternative work schedule
Experience with Matlab is an advantage
Experience in preclinical applications of FUS is an advantage
Competences in management of small animals is not required, the applicant will be trained in the procedures and animal handling, but experience will be an advantage
**This is a two year term limited position.**
This position will remain open until filled. This is a Non-Exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
