As maintenance laborer, you will: • respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions • attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control • demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely • participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, but ot limited to, clearing drainage pipes, maintaining the Right of Way, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling general tasks required to complete road maintenance projects • complete pre-trip equipment inspections, perform preventive maintenance
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Minimum Qualifications
You may be minimally qualified if you have: • knowledge of safety policies, materials and procedures • knowledge of highway maintenance materials and methods • ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs • skill in the operation and maintenance of diverse hand and power tools • ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.
Additional Considerations
Preferred qualifications include: • valid CDL Learners • experience in light to medium duty equipment operation comparable to that used in roadway and or roadside maintenance /construction activities • experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs • experience in emergency operations to include snow removal and preparations, work zone set up and/or flagging, storm clean up, accident response and clean-up
