Job Description
Is responsible for performing and directing a variety of administrative business and educational functions in an academic department by managing the academic, administrative, operational, and human resources functions. This position must remain knowledgeable of policies and procedures to guide the department head, staff, students, faculty, parents, board members, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance. Reporting to the department head, this position manages department operations with a high level of autonomy, directs the work of staff, students and wage employees to ensure timeliness to ensure a high level of customer service. Specific responsibilities include working closely with the department head to develop and manage the department budget, recruiting, hiring, contract review/approval routing, retaining faculty, providing oversite, organize, and track faculty progress toward tenure and other faculty performance measures. Engaging and cultivating students and alumni, working with faculty to develop the teaching /course schedule, timetable, advisory board activates, and other special projects. Uses excellent judgement and decisionmaking skills to ensure the integrity and professionalism of business services, records management, and compliance. Manage internal and external relations by effectively communicating with students, parents, alumni, and other stakeholders. Is responsible for approving financial, human resources, and academic actions.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent level of training and or experience. Significant experience supervising and leading administrative and academic operations with a high degree of autonomy. Previous experience managing the operations of a department. Demonstrated ability to work with confidential, complex, and sensitive information. |Customer service and detail oriented. Working knowledge of procurement and business principles with the ability to research, problem solve, analyze accounts, and create reports. |Proficient knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft applications with the ability to work with complex data, create formulas, and import and export data. Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and personality types to accomplish multiple tasks, strong communication skills and top notch interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in higher education, specifically academics and research. |Experience managing and reporting on financial data that requires you to understand multiple funding sources, such as education and general funds, overhead, sponsored and foundation or private funding.|Experience with financial, academic, and human resource management systems and procedures specific to higher education, such as Banner (finance, HR, and student), HokieMart, Timeclock Plus, TEM, Depart, leave system, CashNet, Academic Works, Online I9 system, Microstrategies, PeopleAdmin, etc. |Demonstrated knowledge and experience with preparing, reconciling and monitoring financial activity and preparing financial reports for Deans, other executives and advisory boards. |Knowledge of university policies, procedures, and experience interpreting those policies to coach and direct the work of others to ensure compliance.
