The VCU Center on Society and Health (CSH) is looking for a Lead User Experience Director with an emphasis on data visualization and a background in graphic design to join our team. This position requires a unique hybrid skillset responsible for producing and or overseeing user experience and product design, web, and user Interface design, print and publication design, data visualization and infographic design, marketing and advertising design, branding and identity design, as well as graphic illustration.

The Lead User Experience Director will lead an interdisciplinary team to complete design projects, including developing style guides, design systems, interaction patterns, and prototypes in line with the project goals. The ideal candidate will be able to translate user research/business requirements into functional user interfaces, delivering rich and complex data in a simple and intuitive format.

The successful candidate will: be comfortable with ambiguity; have experience working with multiple datasets and data visualizations; be well-versed in digital interaction patterns; have enough familiarity with HTML/CSS and javascript to understand what is and isn’t possible; have a good understanding user-experience and accessibility best practices; be able to improve/expand on existing work or create from scratch as needed; be able to create visual consistency as well as flexibility within a design system; work autonomously and proactively to beat deadlines; and have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

The Center on Society and Health is an academic research center that studies the health implications of social inequities-such as education, income, neighborhood environmental conditions, and public policy. The goal of the design team within the center is to translate complex public health data into multi-media deliverables that are user-friendly and easy to understand.

Duties and Responsibilities:

-- Shape a project from its inception - outlining project scope, researching needs, determining requirements, setting vision, defining content strategy, and executing deliverables- all to meet the communication goals of clients.
-- Design and direct across a variety of media (print, motion, web) in Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop. Additionally, skilled in digital prototyping tools like Figma.
-- Use visual design, verbal, and written skills to effectively shape content.
-- Develop a baseline UI kit and Style Guide
-- Create unique identities for projects which encompass logos, color palettes, typography, design elements infographics, and illustrations.
-- Develop and maintain Center style guide and brand assets.
-- Engage in User and subject matter research as well as user testing
-- Produce digital prototypes (from low to high-fidelity)
-- Build rapid mockups to validate ideas and convey UI plans to users and clients when needed
-- Ensure designs meet business requirements, accessibility standards, and UX best practices
-- Ensure design assets are optimized for loading speed performance
-- Deliver impeccable design assets and style guides to developers
-- Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team and problem-solve with a developer
-- Implementation solutions from a user-centered and accessibility perspective when challenges arise
-- Turn data into compelling storytelling through visualization
-- Create beautiful visualizations along with good user experiences
-- Review user stories and participate in planning sessions
-- Assist in usability testing and analyze user feedback and website data to iteratively improve usability
-- Initiate, suggest, and spearhead major UI refactoring for a more intuitive user experience
-- Talent acquisition, management, and mentorship: Lead design work of projects by managing designers, illustrators to complete projects that adhere to scope, budget, and timeline constraints. Select vendors when project scope surpasses internal capabilities. -- Manage vendor relationships, as needed, including printers, videographers, etc.
-- Lead web development of projects by overseeing the Full-Stack Developer to complete projects that adhere to scope, budget, and timeline constraints.
-- Contribute to project planning discussions - developing realistic phases and deadlines
-- Handle administrative tasks for design projects such as hiring and grant proposal planning
-- Additional duties as assigned

Essential Qualifications:

-- At least 8-10 years of professional Design experience across a variety of industries and challenges or a master’s Degree in HCI, Graphic Design or related field.
-- Proficiency in a variety of design tools in Adobe Creative Cloud including the ability to work in either Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD.
-- The ability to extrapolate user research into design deliverables with a knack for reducing complex ideas into essentials needed for a project.
-- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

-- Located in the Richmond, VA metro area (remote candidates will be considered on a case-by-case basis requiring availability on EST for team communication.)
-- Familiarity with public health, behavioral health, and/or social determinants of health and public health subject matter.
-- UX content strategy experience and/or experience working with a content writer.
