Job Duties
The Virginia State Bar is searching for an efficient and self-motivated legal assistant to provide administrative and litigation support for trial attorneys who process ethical complaints against lawyers. The successful candidate will prepare, revise, and finalize correspondence and pleadings; organize and file subpoena responses; prepare and electronically file exhibits; maintain electronic files, tickler systems, and dockets; and perform special projects. This position also receives, evaluates, and processes incoming bar complaints against lawyers and, in collaboration with intake lawyers, analyzes pertinent data from complaint submissions and enters complaint data into a database. The assistant must discern whether the complaint is new or relates to an existing complaint and whether the complaint requires immediate attention based on the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled assistant to learn and be involved in all phases of the disciplinary process and other special projects within the Office of Bar Counsel. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a paperless office environment while processing a large quantity of data and other tasks as assigned by bar counsel. This position is required to work in the Richmond office
Minimum Qualifications
The selected candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, experience working in a legal environment, preferably at a litigation law firm, and the following requirements:
• knowledge of business, office management, and legal processes
• strong organizational skills
• superior writing and communication skills
• computer-savvy and proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, Adobe, and electronic filing systems
• detail-oriented, dependable, proactive
• have good judgment and maintain confidentiality
• able to work independently as well as in a team environment
• comfortable working under pressure within tight deadlines
• satisfactory completion of criminal background check and disclosure of COVID-19 vaccination status as a condition of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
bilingual skills (specifically Spanish) are a plus
