Job Duties
Virginia Military Institute (VMI) seeks a passionate, creative, and service oriented professional to join Preston Library as the Library Developer. The successful candidate will design and build user-centered interfaces for the library’s services and platforms and explore platform integrations. This is a rapidly changing environment, in which creative solutions to platform integrations and virtual services are desired. A willingness to learn, be open to new ideas, and innovate are integral to success in this position.
This position is a full-time, non-tenure-track, non-uniformed Administrative/Professional Faculty position that reports to the Library Director. This is an on-site, in-person position.
Responsibilities
• Full stack developer
• Develop well designed, well-commented, testable, secure, and efficient code using modern software development practices
• Integrate data from various back-end services and databases
• Gather and define specifications and requirements based on technical needs
• Create and maintain software documentation
• Responsible for the library’s web presence
• Stay informed about emerging technology trends and apply them to operations
• Collaborate with UX and Systems librarians as well as other stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
• BS in computer science or related field
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Must be able to work well in group and individual environments
• Knowledge and skills working with modern HTML and CSS
• Proficiency in programming environments such as javascript, JQuery, React, Node.js, PHP, Python, or SQL
• Creative problem-solving skills
• Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced environment, learn rapidly and master diverse and new web technologies and techniques.
Preferred Qualifications:
• MLIS
• Experience working in academic environment
• Experience with APIs
• Proven working experience in web programming
