Job Duties
Provides evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
Screens for sick call, administers medications, and provides first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
Maintains open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
Records all pertinent information into the medical record.
Interfaces with other departments as needed.
Promotes continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
Nurses must have the ability to work hours, days and locations as assigned along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
Organizational Objective:
Provide total health care to offenders (routine, chronic and emergent care), maintaining continuity of care from admission to discharge in a correctional facility.
Safe medication administration following DOC policy.
Provide employee health services in accordance with policy.
Follows operational policies/procedures, Health Services guidelines/policies, ACA standards of care, and Board of Health professionals’ scope of practice.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia LPN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application).
Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
Experience in carrying out provider’s orders in applying treatments.
Maintaining appropriate documentation.
Competent first aid skills.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment.
Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care.
