The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (Virginia ABC) is seeking a litigation attorney with exceptional analytical, organizational, and oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple litigation matters in state and federal courts. The successful candidate will be the lead attorney for providing guidance and representation for the Bureau of Law Enforcement as Virginia ABC undertakes its direct-to-consumer initiative. Representation for the Bureau of Law Enforcement shall include serving as primary associate for at least one Virginia ABC Region, as well as responding to public safety matters.

This role will communicate directly with Authority staff and executives advising on a variety of contract-related legal compliance matters. When appropriate, the position will provide interpretation and guidance on laws, rulings, regulations, and compliance for various transactions. The successful candidate will provide counsel to various business units within the Authority as needed.

Areas of Responsibility

• Represents the Authority in various litigation (Circuit Court; Appeals Court; Federal Court)
• Represents the Bureau of Law Enforcement in Administrative Hearings and Appeals
• Argues motions, writes briefings and participate in mediations
• Negotiates settlement agreements
• Conducts legal research and drafts memorandum of law
• Provides on-demand guidance to the Bureau of Law Enforcement regarding direct-to-consumer compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience taking and defending depositions and interrogatories
• Negotiating settlement agreements
• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school at the time of application
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the practice of law
• Active member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar at the time of application

Preferred Qualifications

• 7-10 years litigation experience in a mid-to-large size firm
• Extensive court experience as the lead or solo attorney
• Knowledge and experience in alcohol beverage control law
• Knowledge and experience in e-commerce and direct-to-consumer transactions
