The Mary and Frances Youth Center has an exciting opportunity for a part-time Lobs & Lessons Program Coordinator .
The Mary and Frances Youth Center (MFYC) on the VCU campus, opened in 2007 and offers two private tennis courts and classrooms designed for youth programming and youth centered training. Lobs & Lessons is an afterschool and summer enrichment program for elementary and middle school age youth that focuses on character development, future orientation and the sport of tennis. The primary location is MFYC, however, some programs are offsite at area schools. The afterschool program runs Monday - Friday between the hours of 2:30-6:30pm. This position will spend part of their time leading enrichment programming, and the other part divided between planning, coordination, and outreach efforts.
The Opportunity
Job Responsibilities :
Lead in the direction, supervision, and organization of participants and volunteers.
Promote youth safety by managing challenging situations and redirecting youth behaviors.
Plan and develop weekly plans and activities.
Responsible for programmatic administrative tasks to include creating monthly program calendars, developing and organizing attendance sheets, tracking registration system, calling parents or partners and taking payments.
Direct program activities for youth:
Lead daily life skills lessons
Lead on-court tennis instructions (on and off site)
Support the program’s Youth Quality improvement process.
Organize and represent the program at local community events and outreach efforts (may include some evenings and weekends).
Serve as lead in supervision of program staff, providing modifications and parental interaction.
Lead weekly team meetings and provide additional support to the program staff as necessary.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Experience and desire to work with children; specifically, afterschool, summer or classroom setting.
K-12 educational and/or out-of-school time program experience preferred.
Tennis coaching/teaching experience; USPTA or PTR certification preferred. Additional training online and on-court provided.
Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with staff, parents and volunteers.
Proven ability to maintain high levels of endurance, positive attitude, and leadership abilities.
Ability to make decisions and organize staff around necessary tasks.
Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-motivator, responsible and adaptable.
Dependable transportation required with space for tennis equipment.
Physical Requirements of the Job:
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and withstand daily exposure to sun and heat.
Willing to work in a youth setting; inside and outside.
