THIS IS AN HOURLY POSITION THAT IS LIMITED TO 29 HOURS A WEEK, 1500 HOURS IN A 12-MONTH PERIOD AND IS NOT ENTITLED TO STATE BENEFITS PACKAGE.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Richmond District – Petersburg Residency is seeking qualified Highway Maintenance Laborers to fill vacancies at our Church Road, Nottoway and Prince George AHQs.
These positions will assist with repairs and maintenance of State roadways and their surrounding right of ways. Duties include operation of hand and power tools and performance of minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools. Performs manual labor, practices safety at all times, and works as part of a team as well as independently.
The positions are designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations and requires work outside of normal hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Minimum Qualifications
* Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
* Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools.
* Skill in the operation and maintenance of light and medium equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
* Ability to perform mowing operations
* Ability to perform manual labor tasks (i.e. flagging, debris pickup and etc.)
* Ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions.
* Valid driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications:
* High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
* Experience in equipment operation and performing preventative maintenance.
* Experience performing roadway maintenance and/or construction activities.
* Experience with emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up
Special Instructions:
If selected as a finalist, you will undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history records check required. References, work history, and DMV records verified prior to commencement of employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical. Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, terrain and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense. Ability to perform manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available.
